The Marchionda Minutes Episode 7 – Merry Merry Everybody
I want to start today’s post off by saying thanks for being such a well behaved class walking over to the PAC, watching the winter program, and walking back over to school. You made this kind of a day such a fun one!
We also had time to squeeeeeze in a podcast. Read below:
Episode 7 – Today we talked with Merry. Merry is a student with diabetes and took the time to explain a bit about what diabetes is, and how it affects her life. We learn what it is like to have a simple birthday cupcake. Oh, yeah, and today is her birthday, so we learn about what Merry wants and what she is going to do over winter break!

Episode 6 – the sixth episode of the Marchionda Minutes PodCast has Sam telling us about a vacation to South Dakota, his birthday party, and a baseball story. After answering some of my goofy questions (having Chris Farley play me in a movie about my life!) we end the show with a duet. Enjoy!

Today we recorded our fifth episode of the Marchionda Minutes PodCast. Our guest was Monica. Head on over here to give it a listen.
We are almost finished with our WKCE testing, needing only to finish up three shorter sessions of math. Tomorrow will be our last day of testing.
In social studies we will be beginning a new unit on communities. For this we will be using our text book and other materials. In math we will be testing tomorrow on adding larger numbers. Next week we will be beginning subtraction concepts, then moving into larger subtraction using blocks and expanded notation to express borrowing. I may be inviting parents into the classroom to help out. Look for an invitation in these posts.
Today in math we reviewed for our addition test tomorrow. Below is my coaching. Using Photoshop we did the math together. I would keep my answers on another layer that was invisible to the students. Periodically we would check our work.
Even though I only worked through probelm 19, all 25 are expected to be completed by tomorrow.

Our latest episode of the Marchionda Minuted podcast stars Jake. I will let you go over to our podcast page to listen to Jake talk about sports and super powers.
Not much news other than the podcast. I have been really busy getting ready for the conferences tonight. Each parent will get a report that includes graphs of how your child is doing in each subject area relative to the class average. There is a sample one below.
Looking forward to seeing you all at conferences!

During our computer lab time, while all students were exploring addition using virtual base ten blocks, Ashely and I sat down to record our third episode of the Marchionda Minutes PodCast. Its a great show! Head on over here to listen to it on our “Podcast” page.
Today in math we practiced regrouping in the ten and hundreds places, even throwing in regrouping to the thousands place. I appreciate all of the hard work and the way you pay attention in class. Great work, kids! You all make teaching a joy.
Next I would like to put out a reminder to all parents and students to be sure to wear a warm jacket to school. That’s what the cute squirrel is for. He is here politely requesting your warmth on the playground. Warm Jackets make this squirrel happy. You would not want to see this cure squirrel become sad, now, would you? Please wear your warm jackets. Thanks.

I shot about ten minutes of footage of us for all of you during our math time. What we were doing is using base ten blocks to understand the concept behind regrouping when adding larger numbers. In our groups we had about eight problems to solve. Each member of the group rotated specific jobs. The teamwork was fantastic.
I also recorded our first podcast with Caden. Check out The Marchionda Minutes. Unfortunately, I am having some XML trouble with the podcast and iTunes, so you won’t be able to get them through iTunes, but you can get them right here. Enjoy, I know I sure do!
Friday News/Podcast
On our reading test today for the story Nate the Great San Francisco Detective our class scored an average of 94% with 20 A’s! This tells me that we are using our question and answer skills (along with our books) to nearly the best of our abilities. There were also not grades lower than a B-!! I am blushing with great, great pride over my students.
In next week news, we will be learning about different types of nouns in English, then identifying them in our writing. We will be doing our nouns study for a couple weeks, then on to verbs.
I have recorded a brief message for parents (and students, too). This message marks the beginning or our 2009-10 podcast season. Click here to learn what a podcast is. Right now I do not have our podcast set up in iTunes, but hope to soon! Hope you enjoy!
By the way, Nadia says, “PPPPBBBBBBTTTTTTT!”
