The Process of Graphing, Video, Too!

Today we began exploring the process of graphing information. We broke down the process into four steps:

1. Collecting Data

2. Organizing the Data

3. Charting the Data

4. Interpreting the Data

In today’s lesson we focused on the first two steps through trial and error. As you can see in this gallery below, we found a progression towards efficiency with our data collection and organization. Nice work kids!

Here is a video of us collecting data in our small groups:

By the way, don’t forget to watch the video in the post below as part of your homework. Tomorrow we will be mapping the story a bit more, then onto our rough drafts!

A-Ha Rules! Take On Me . . .

Look your finest and look your best, we’ll put that camera to the test! That’s right, tomorrow is our class picture. Take some extra time in the morning to straighten your hair and look your best. :)

In writing we are putting all of our language arts and writing skills together for the rest of the school year by doing some larger written projects. Today we began a writing project where we are taking this music video and deconstructing its elements of character, plot, events, and setting. We are then going to construct a story (and back story) to help make the video make more sense. Children of the 80′s, you are going to love to see what your child comes up with. Pull up your leg warmers, pop your collars, and enjoy the video!

Science and Math Tests This Week

Later this week we will be finishing up our natural resources unit by taking a quiz on soils. We will also be finishing up division with a test late in the week. In science we will jump into body systems and in math we are going to explore data collection and graphing. With the remaining days in math we will review writing our subtraction problems in block, expanded and standard notation.

This week in social studies we will be learning about Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights movement. We will be summarizing our learning orally and in writing. Should be a fun week!

Tsunami Video

I found this video this morning (excuse the ad at the beginning) that shows a swimming pool during a 7.2 earthquake. This video (somewhere near the end) shows a great example of how a tsunami is formed. You can also make your own little tsunami by filling a glass of water half full then moving it back and forth, repeatedly. This week, one of the things we learned was that a tsunami is formed by and earthquake underwater. Cool stuff! Enjoy and have a great weekend.

There’s No Place Like Loam

Today in our soils unit in science we learned that there are different types of soils. We learned mainly about clay and loam. We then got to get our hands on dry clay, wet clay, loam, humus, and sand. This was helpful because we learned that the smaller the particles that a particular soil is made up of, the better it holds water. Therefore clay gets maliable with water and sand lets water run right through it. The best was the humus. That was strangely, wonderfully, soft. Joe wants a pillow made of it. Frankly, I think that is a little gross.

Anna’s mom sent in the rock star picture of me during our spring concert. Hmmmm . . . what do you think Simon Cowel would say? Thanks for sending in the picture, you made my day. And, now, I share it with you all!
